Early Life of Jeanne Lanvin
Jeanne Lanvin was born in Paris, France, on January 1, 1867. She was the oldest of 11 children. Her parents were Constantin Lanvin and Sophie Deshayes.
When she was 16, Jeanne started learning to make hats. She became an apprentice milliner at Madame Félix in Paris. She also trained with other famous hatmakers. By 1889, she had her own hat shop in Paris.
Her Amazing Fashion Career
In 1909, Jeanne Lanvin officially became a couturière. This means she was a high-fashion designer.
At first, she made beautiful clothes for her daughter, Marguerite. Other wealthy people saw these clothes and wanted copies for their own children. Soon, mothers also asked Jeanne to design dresses for them.
Her new fashion shop, or boutique, became very popular. Many famous people in Europe became her customers.
Growing the Lanvin Empire
Jeanne Lanvin's business grew a lot. By 1923, she even owned a factory that dyed fabrics.
In the 1920s, she opened more shops. These shops sold items for home décor, men's clothing, furs, and lingerie.
Her biggest success was creating Lanvin Parfums SA in 1924. Her most famous perfume was called Arpège. She launched it in 1927. The idea for Arpège came from listening to her daughter practice piano scales. Arpège is a French word for a musical term, arpeggio.
Working with Armand-Albert Rateau
In 1922, Jeanne Lanvin worked with a famous French designer named Armand-Albert Rateau. He helped her redesign her apartment, homes, and businesses.
Some of the rooms from her apartment were even moved to a museum in Paris in 1985. Rateau designed special bronze furniture for her home.
Jeanne and Armand became good friends. Rateau also helped manage parts of her company. He designed the round bottle for the Arpège perfume. This bottle is still used today. It has a gold picture of Jeanne Lanvin and her daughter Marguerite on it.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1895, Jeanne Lanvin married Count Emilio di Pietro. Two years later, they had a daughter named Marguerite. Marguerite later became an opera singer.
Jeanne and Emilio divorced in 1903. In 1907, Jeanne married Xavier Melet. He was a journalist and later a French consul in England.
Jeanne Lanvin passed away on July 6, 1946. After her death, her daughter Marguerite took over the Lanvin fashion house. Jeanne's original office is still kept in the Lanvin company's main building in Paris.
