Jee Hyun Kim is an Australian scientist who studies the brain. She is a behavioral neuroscientist. This means she looks at how our brains learn and remember things. Her work especially focuses on how emotions, learning, and memory work in children and teenagers.

Dr. Kim is a professor and leads the Molecular Psychiatry Laboratory. This lab is at the Deakin University School of Medicine in Australia. She also loves to share science with everyone. She has given talks at places like TEDx Melbourne and the Australian Museum. She has also been on TV and radio shows.

Understanding the Brain

Dr. Kim's research helps us understand how our brains learn and forget. She has shown that how we learn and remember scary things changes as we grow up. It's different for kids, teenagers, and adults. Her work suggests that it might be possible to "erase" scary memories early in life.

How We Study Fear

Dr. Kim's lab uses special studies to understand how the brain works. They use animal models that act a lot like humans. This helps them learn about the brain's role in behavior.

One way they study how we learn fear is using something called classical conditioning. This idea came from a scientist named Ivan Pavlov over 100 years ago. It's still used today to learn about fear and worry.

Dr. Kim's research also looks at how we can "unlearn" things. This is called extinction. It's a type of learning that helps people with worries or fears. It's used in therapies where people slowly face what they are afraid of. This helps their brain learn that it's actually safe.

Dr. Kim has written over 70 scientific papers. Other scientists have used her work in their own studies more than 2,700 times. This shows how important her research is!

Dr. Kim's Journey

Jee Hyun Kim started her university studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2004. She was a top student and even won a special award called the University Medal in Psychology. She then earned her PhD in psychology in 2008. During her PhD, she wrote six scientific articles.

After finishing her PhD, Dr. Kim continued her research. She worked at UNSW and then at the University of Michigan. Later, she became a Senior Research Officer at the Florey Institute. She then became the head of a lab there. It was called the Developmental Psychobiology Laboratory.

Helping the Science Community

Dr. Kim is a strong supporter of women in science. She has worked to help more women succeed in scientific research. She was even mentioned in a book about building careers for women in science.

She is also a board member for the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology. She helps organize and lead meetings for scientists from all over the world. She is also the treasurer for Biological Psychiatry Australia.
