Jeff Farmer: The Wizard of AFL
Jeff Farmer started his professional football journey in 1995. He joined the Melbourne Football Club. From the start, he was one of the most exciting players in the AFL. Fans loved watching him play.
Playing for Melbourne
In 2000, Jeff had a fantastic game against Collingwood. He kicked 9 goals in the second half alone. This was his best goal-kicking performance ever. He finished the 2000 season with 76 goals. This was a career high for him. He was also named in the All-Australian team that year. After playing 118 games and kicking 259 goals for Melbourne, he moved teams. He was traded to the Fremantle Dockers at the end of 2001.
Time with Fremantle
Jeff's first two years with Fremantle were a bit slow. He kicked fewer than 30 goals each season. But in 2004, he started playing much better. He became the Dockers' second-best forward. This continued through the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
In 2006, Jeff had his best season since 2000. He scored 55 goals in just 19 games. He was in great form towards the end of that season. Many people thought he might be chosen for the All-Australian team again. However, he was not selected that year. Jeff Farmer announced his retirement from AFL football at the end of the 2008 AFL season. He finished his impressive career with 249 games played.
Life After AFL
After retiring from the AFL, Jeff Farmer decided to keep playing football. In 2009, he joined the South Fremantle Football Club. He played in the WAFL.
On-Field Incidents
During his career, Jeff Farmer faced some challenges. He received suspensions for his actions on the field. For example, in a pre-season game, he was suspended for rough play. This was his 10th suspension and 14th time appearing before the tribunal.
In August 2007, during a game against St Kilda, Jeff was injured. He received facial injuries and had to leave the game. Another player, Steven Baker, was later suspended for rough conduct. Jeff even wrote a letter asking for leniency for Baker. He described Baker as a respected opponent.
In June 2008, Jeff was suspended for a week by the Fremantle Football Club. This was because he did not attend a required recovery session. He retired from AFL football at the end of the 2008 season.
