The Jefferson Valley Mall is a large indoor shopping center located in Yorktown, New York. It first opened its doors in 1983. Today, its main stores are Macy's and Dick's Sporting Goods. The mall is currently managed by a company called Washington Prime Group.
The Mall's Story
How It Started
The Jefferson Valley Mall was built in 1983 by a company named Melvin Simon & Associates. When it first opened, it had two major department stores: Sears and Read's. Over time, the Read's store changed names several times, becoming Jordan Marsh, then Abraham & Straus, and finally Macy's.
Changes Over Time
In 1996, there were plans to make the mall even bigger. These plans included adding more space to the Macy's store and bringing in another large anchor store.
A store called Service Merchandise closed in 1999. In 2001, a popular clothing store, H&M, took its place.
In the early 2000s, the mall got a fresh new look. Workers updated the floors and changed the colors inside. They also removed the fountain and some trees that were there before.
New Owners and Future Plans
In 2015, the Sears store at the mall became part of a different company called Seritage Growth Properties. Then, in February 2016, the entire mall changed ownership from Simon Property Group to Washington Prime Group.
There are exciting plans for the mall's future. Construction is happening to make the mall bigger and give it another update. In 2018, it was announced that the Sears store would close. Part of the first floor where Sears used to be is expected to become a 24 Hour Fitness gym.
