Yorktown Heights is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It's located in the town of Yorktown, which is part of Westchester County in New York. In 2020, about 1,884 people lived there.

History of Yorktown Heights
Yorktown Heights is in the northern part of Westchester County, about 45 miles from New York City. The area is known for its rolling hills, farms, homes, and some light industry. One important place here is the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
Early Settlement and the American Revolution
People first settled in Yorktown in 1683. The area was very important during the American Revolution. A place called Pines Bridge, which crossed the Croton River, was guarded by the 1st Rhode Island Regiment. This special unit included both African American and Native American soldiers.
The town of Yorktown was officially formed in 1788. It was named after the big victory by American and French forces at Yorktown, Virginia.
The Old Railroad Station
The Yorktown Heights Railroad Station is a historic building. It used to be a stop on the New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division. The last passenger train left the station in 1958. In 1981, this old station was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.
Geography and Climate
Yorktown Heights is located at coordinates 41°16′38″N 73°46′53″W / 41.27722°N 73.78139°W. The entire area of the Yorktown Heights CDP is about 2.4 square kilometers (0.92 square miles), and it's all land. Like many parts of northern Westchester County, Yorktown is mostly hilly and covered with trees.

In 2000, there were about 7,972 people living in the larger CDP area that included Yorktown Heights. Most people were White (about 90%). There were also African American, Native American, and Asian residents, along with people of other backgrounds. About 5.59% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
Many families live in Yorktown Heights. In 2000, about 44.6% of households had children under 18. The average household had about 3 people. The median age of people living here was 39 years old. This means half the people were younger than 39, and half were older.
Cool Places to Visit
Yorktown Heights has many interesting historical spots, especially from the Colonial times and the Revolutionary War. These include the Hyatt House, Lanes Tavern, and one of the first Presbyterian churches in the area.
The old Yorktown Heights Railroad Station, built in 1905, is another famous landmark. It was once a stop on the New York and Putnam Railroad Line, also known as the "Old Put."
If you like being outdoors, Turkey Mountain is a popular hiking spot. It's cared for by the Yorktown Land Trust. The North County Trailway is also nearby, a great path for running and biking.
Getting Around
U.S. Route 202 goes right through Yorktown Heights. The Taconic State Parkway is also close by, to the west. The Yorktown Heights Railroad Station stopped having passenger trains in 1958. This was just a year before all passenger service ended on the New York Central's Putnam Division.
