Jeffery Paul Hopkins, born in 1960, is an American lawyer and a judge. He serves as a United States district judge for the Southern District of Ohio. Before becoming a district judge, he was a United States bankruptcy judge in the same court.

Learning and Education
Jeffery P. Hopkins attended Middlesex School. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Bowdoin College in 1982. He then went on to study law at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, where he received his law degree in 1985.
His Career as a Lawyer and Judge
After law school, Hopkins worked as a law clerk. This means he helped judges with their research and writing. He worked for Judge Alan Eugene Norris in Ohio from 1985 to 1987.
From 1987 to 1990, he was a lawyer at a firm called Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP. Then, from 1990 to 1993, he worked as an assistant United States attorney. This role involves representing the U.S. government in legal cases. Hopkins also taught law as a professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law for many years, from 1998 to 2011.
Becoming a Bankruptcy Judge
From 1996 to 2022, Hopkins served as a United States bankruptcy judge. A bankruptcy judge handles cases where people or companies cannot pay their debts. From 2014 to 2022, he was the Chief Judge of the bankruptcy court. This means he was the main judge in charge.
Becoming a District Judge
On July 29, 2022, President Joe Biden announced that he wanted to nominate Hopkins to become a United States district judge. This is a higher level of judge. His nomination was sent to the Senate on August 1, 2022. He was nominated to fill the position left by Judge Timothy Black.
Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman recommended Hopkins to the President. On October 12, 2022, a hearing was held about his nomination before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. This committee reviews people nominated for judge positions.
On December 1, 2022, the committee voted to approve his nomination. Then, on December 7, 2022, the United States Senate voted to move forward with his nomination. Finally, on December 8, 2022, the Senate voted to confirm him as a judge. He officially started his new role as a district judge on December 16, 2022.
Personal Life
Jeffery P. Hopkins lives in Cincinnati with his wife, Michelle. They have two adult children.
His family has a connection to an important legal case. In 1943, his uncle, Robert "Bobby" Hall, was involved in an incident that led to a famous Supreme Court of the United States decision in 1945. This case, called Screws v. United States, was about civil rights and the power of the federal government to protect them.
