Jeffrey Buben's Early Life and Training

Jeffrey Buben grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. His father used to work for the FBI. Jeffrey loved cooking and decided to make it his career.

He studied at The Culinary Institute of America, which is a very well-known cooking school. He graduated in 1978. After finishing school, he worked in several restaurants in New York City. This helped him learn many different cooking styles and techniques.

Moving to Washington D.C.

In 1984, Jeffrey Buben moved to Washington, D.C.. He continued to work as a chef in some of the city's top hotels. He cooked at Nicholas, which was inside the Mayflower Hotel. He also worked at the Occidental Grill, located in the historic Willard Hotel. These experiences helped him become an even better chef.

Opening His Own Restaurants

In 1993, Jeffrey Buben and his wife, Sallie, opened their very first restaurant together. They named it Vidalia, and it was located in the Dupont Circle area of D.C. Vidalia quickly became famous for its amazing Southern-style food. People especially loved the corn bread, which was made using Sallie's grandmother's special recipe! The popular food magazine Bon Appétit even called Vidalia one of the nation's "Best New Restaurants."

Awards and New Ventures

Jeffrey Buben's talent was recognized in 1999 when he won a big award. He received the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. This award is like the "Oscars" for chefs!

In September 1998, the Bubens opened their second restaurant, Bistro Bis. This restaurant served French bistro food, which is a type of casual French cooking. It was located near Washington Union Station in the George Hotel. Later, in November 2012, they opened a third restaurant called Woodward Table in downtown D.C. After more than 20 years, Vidalia closed its doors in 2016.

Jeffrey and Sallie Buben have three children. Their names are Sarah, Alex, and Mac.
