Jeffrey Ross Toobin (born May 21, 1960) is an American lawyer, author, and legal analyst. He is well-known for his work as a commentator on legal topics for CNN.
Toobin worked for the Department of Justice during the Iran–Contra affair investigation. In the 1990s, he started writing full-time and published his first books. He wrote for The New Yorker magazine from 1993 to 2020. After a personal incident in 2020, he left The New Yorker. He continued to be a legal analyst for CNN until August 2022, and returned as a frequent guest in February 2024.
Jeffrey Toobin has written several books about important legal cases. These include stories about the 1970s Patty Hearst kidnapping and the O. J. Simpson murder case. Two of his books were made into TV series for FX's American Crime Story.
Early Life and Education
Jeffrey Toobin was born in New York City in 1960. His mother, Marlene Sanders, was a famous news reporter for ABC News and CBS News. His father, Jerome Toobin, was a news producer.
Toobin went to Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School. For his college studies, he attended Harvard College. While there, he wrote about sports for the student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. He graduated with high honors, earning a degree in American history and literature. He also received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
He then went to Harvard Law School. He was an editor for the Harvard Law Review, a respected legal journal. He earned his law degree in 1986, also with high honors.
Career Highlights
After law school, Toobin worked for a U.S. circuit judge. He then served as a lawyer for Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh during the Iran–Contra affair investigation. Later, he became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.
Toobin wrote a book called Opening Arguments (1991) about his experiences working on the Iran-Contra case. After three years as a U.S. Attorney, he left the practice of law. In 1993, he began working as a writer for The New Yorker magazine. In 1996, he also started working as a legal analyst for ABC television.
Toobin became known for his legal analysis on TV. In 1994, he reported a big story in The New Yorker about the O. J. Simpson criminal trial. He also provided analysis for the O. J. Simpson civil case and the investigation of President Bill Clinton.
He wrote books about some of these cases. The Run of His Life: The People v OJ Simpson (1997) and A Vast Conspiracy (1999) became very popular. These books were later adapted into TV series.
In 2000, Toobin won an Emmy Award for his reporting on the Elián González custody case. This case involved a young boy who was returned from the United States to Cuba.
Toobin joined CNN in 2002 as a legal analyst. In 2003, he got the first interview with Martha Stewart about her legal charges.
Jeffrey Toobin has written seven books. His book The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court (2007) won awards from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.
His next book was The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court (2012). He also wrote American Heiress: The Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst (2016). All of these books became New York Times Best Sellers.
In 2020, he wrote True Crimes and Misdemeanors, the Investigation of Donald Trump. This book looked at the presidency of Donald Trump.
On August 12, 2022, Toobin announced he was leaving CNN after 20 years. His last day on air was August 4, 2022. However, in February 2024, Toobin began appearing on CNN again. He now offers legal analysis on current events, including the legal situations of President Biden and former President Trump.
Books Adapted for Television
Two of Toobin's books have been made into TV series. His book about the O.J. Simpson trial became The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. This was a mini-series in 2016, the first season of the FX true-crime series.
His book A Vast Conspiracy (1999), about the investigation of President Clinton, was adapted into a series called Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021). This was another season in the FX anthology series.
Personal Life
In 1986, Jeffrey Toobin married Amy Bennett McIntosh. They met in college while working at The Harvard Crimson. Amy McIntosh is a Harvard graduate and has an MBA degree. She has held important jobs at companies like Verizon Communications. They have two adult children, a daughter and a son.
Toobin also has a son born in 2009 with attorney Casey Greenfield.
