Jeffrey Ross Toobin (born May 21, 1960) is an American lawyer, writer, and legal expert. He is known for sharing his legal opinions on television, especially for CNN. He has also written several popular books about important legal cases and events.
Toobin worked for the U.S. government early in his career. He helped investigate a big government event called the Iran–Contra affair. Later, he became a full-time writer. He wrote for The New Yorker magazine for many years, from 1993 to 2020. He also worked as a legal expert for CNN for two decades.
Toobin has written books about famous events. These include the 1970s Patty Hearst kidnapping and the O. J. Simpson murder case. Some of his books were even made into TV shows. For example, his book about the O. J. Simpson case became a TV series in 2016.

Early Life and Education
Jeffrey Toobin was born in New York City in 1960. His mother, Marlene Sanders, was a well-known TV news reporter. His father, Jerome Toobin, produced news broadcasts.
Toobin went to Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School. For college, he attended Harvard College. There, he wrote sports articles for the school newspaper, The Harvard Crimson. He earned a degree in American history and literature. He also received a special scholarship called the Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
After college, he went to Harvard Law School. He was an editor for the Harvard Law Review. He finished law school in 1986.
Career as a Legal Expert
While in law school, Toobin started writing for The New Republic magazine. After becoming a lawyer, he worked for a U.S. circuit judge. He then joined a team investigating the Iran–Contra affair. This was a major government investigation. He also worked as a prosecutor in Brooklyn, New York.
Toobin wrote a book called Opening Arguments in 1991. It was about his work on the Oliver North trial. There was a legal discussion about his right to publish the book. A judge decided that Toobin and his publisher could release it. This case helped confirm the right to publish such information.
In 1993, Toobin left his job as a prosecutor. He decided to focus on writing. He became a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. In 1996, he also started working as a legal expert for ABC television.
Analyzing High-Profile Cases
Toobin became well-known for his TV legal analysis. In 1994, he reported a big story for The New Yorker. He revealed that the lawyers for O. J. Simpson planned to say a police officer planted evidence.
He also won an Emmy Award in 2000. This was for his reporting on the Elián González custody case. This case involved a young boy from Cuba.
In 2002, Toobin joined CNN as a legal analyst. He interviewed Martha Stewart in 2003. This was about legal charges she faced.
Toobin has written seven books. His book The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court (2007) won several awards. It explored the inner workings of the U.S. Supreme Court.
His next book, The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court (2012), also focused on the Supreme Court. In 2016, he wrote American Heiress. This book looked at the kidnapping of Patty Hearst in the 1970s. All these books became New York Times Best Sellers.
In 2020, he wrote True Crimes and Misdemeanors. This book discussed the investigation into the presidency of Donald Trump.
Toobin announced in August 2022 that he would leave CNN. His last day on air was August 4, 2022. However, he started appearing on CNN again in February 2024. He now offers analysis on current legal situations involving political figures.
Books Adapted for Television
Two of Jeffrey Toobin's books have been made into TV shows. His book about the O.J. Simpson trial became a mini-series. It was called The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. This show premiered in 2016.
Another one of his books, A Vast Conspiracy (1999), was also adapted. It became a series called Impeachment: American Crime Story in 2021. Both shows were part of the FX true-crime series.

In 1986, Jeffrey Toobin married Amy Bennett McIntosh. They met in college while working on the school newspaper. Amy graduated from Harvard in 1980. She also earned an MBA degree from Harvard Business School. She has held important jobs at companies like Verizon Communications. They have two adult children, a daughter and a son.
