Jeneen Frei Njootli (born 1988) is a talented artist from the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. She creates art using many different forms. Her work often involves sound, fabrics, and live performances. She also explores fashion, leads workshops, and even uses barbeques in her art!

What Jeneen Does
Jeneen is a co-founder of the ReMatriate Collective. This group works to show more accurate and positive images of Indigenous women in media. They want to make sure Indigenous women are seen and heard.
Artworks and Exhibitions
Jeneen was one of five artists chosen for the 2018 Sobey Art Award. This is a very important art prize in Canada. Her artwork, called wind sucked in through bared teeth (2017), was shown at the National Gallery of Canada.
In 2016, Jeneen spent time at the Western Front Society in Vancouver. This is a special place called an artist-run centre. It's a place where artists can create and share their work.
Jeneen has also worked on projects with another artist, Olivia Whetung. Olivia wrote a piece called Fugitive Dust. This was for Jeneen’s solo art show titled I Can’t Make You Those Mitts Because There Is a Hole in My Heart and My Hands Hurt (2018).
Jeneen's Education
Jeneen studied art at the University of British Columbia. She earned a special degree called an M.F.A. in 2017. Before that, in 2016, she also completed a training program called the Earth Line Indigenous Tattoo residency.
Live Performances
Jeneen often performs her art live for audiences. These performances can include sound art and other creative actions. She has performed in many places, including:

Awards and Special Mentions
Jeneen has received several important awards for her art.
- In 2018, she was a finalist for the Sobey Art Award. This means she was one of the top artists from the West Coast and Yukon regions.
- In 2017, she was also on the longlist for the Sobey Art Award.
- Also in 2017, she won the Artist Prize from the Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver.
- In 2016, Jeneen received the William & Meredith Saunderson Prize. This award is for new Canadian artists who are just starting out.
