Early Days and Naming
The community was officially named in 1912. It was named after Jenkin B. Jones (1841–1916), who was born in Glynneath, Wales. The local post office also opened its doors on October 15, 1912.
Coal Mining and Important Buildings
Jenkinjones was a very important place for coal mining. From 1961 to 1975, the Pocahontas Fuel Company mined a huge amount of coal here – over 8 million tons!
The Pocahontas Fuel Company Store and Office Buildings are located in Jenkinjones. These buildings were so important that they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This list helps protect places that are special because of their history or architecture.
