Jennifer Lynn Baskerville-Burrows is an important leader in the Episcopal Church. She serves as the bishop for the Diocese of Indianapolis. She was chosen for this role in October 2016 and officially became a bishop on April 29, 2017.

Bishop Baskerville-Burrows made history as the first African-American woman to be chosen as a diocesan bishop. Before becoming a bishop, she worked as the Director of Networking for the Diocese of Chicago. She also served as a priest in several other Episcopal dioceses across the United States.

Her Early Life and Schooling

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows grew up in New York City. She went to Smith College and studied architecture and urban planning. She finished college in 1988.

In 1989, she joined the Episcopal Church (United States). She had been looking for a church community for a long time. Later, she studied Historic Preservation Planning at Cornell University, earning a master's degree in 1994.

She then decided to train to become a minister. She attended the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, which is a special school for Episcopal leaders. She earned her Master of Divinity degree in 1997.

Her Journey in Ministry

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows became a deacon in the Episcopal Church on June 11, 1997. A deacon is a church leader who helps with services and serves the community. She became a priest on February 7, 1998.

She served in different churches across the country. From 1997 to 1999, she was an Assistant Rector at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Endicott, New York. Then, she worked at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Morristown, New Jersey, helping with Christian education.

On September 11, 2001, she was in New York City. She was at Trinity Church near the World Trade Center. She described finding peace during that difficult time through her faith.

Later, she worked at All Saints' Episcopal Church in San Francisco. She also helped with alumni relations at her divinity school. From 2004 to 2012, she was the Rector (head priest) of Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse, New York. She also served as a chaplain for Syracuse University students. In 2012, she moved to the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago to work as the Director of Networking.

Becoming a Bishop

On October 28, 2016, Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows was chosen to be the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. This was a very important moment because she became the first African-American woman to be elected as a diocesan bishop in the Episcopal Church.

She officially became a bishop on April 29, 2017. This special ceremony, called a consecration, took place at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis. The next day, April 30, she was officially seated in her new role.

Her Family Life

Jennifer Baskerville married Harrison Burrows on March 22, 2003. They have one son named Timothy.
