Jenny Bannister was born in 1954 in Mildura, a town in Victoria, Australia. When she was a teenager, she moved to Melbourne with her sister. Jenny studied fashion design at RMIT. She finished her studies in 1974. After college, she worked in clothing shops on Chapel Street in Melbourne. Soon after, she started her very own fashion brand.
Fashion Career Highlights
Starting Her Own Label
In 1976, Jenny started her own fashion company called Jenny Bannister Fashion. This was during a time when fashion was becoming very bold and new. Over time, her designs grew into high fashion and fancy boutique styles.
Designing for Special Events
During the 1980s, Jenny's work was shown at events by the Fashion Design Council. This group helped new and different fashion designers. In 1988, Jenny successfully started designing modern evening clothes. Many famous people now love and wear her designs. Her clothes are often seen at the Melbourne Fashion Festival. Some of her special pieces have even been sold at Christie's auction house in London.
Her Work in Art Galleries
Because Jenny's designs are so creative and special, many of her important clothes are kept in big art galleries and museums. The National Gallery of Victoria collects her work from the 1970s and 1980s. They even showed some of her pieces in their 2016 exhibition, "200 Years of Australian Fashion."
National Recognition
In 2005, Jenny Bannister was honored on a special Australian postage stamp. She was featured alongside other famous Australian fashion designers. These included Collette Dinnigan, Akira Isogawa, Joe Saba, Carla Zampatti, and Prue Acton.
Curating Exhibitions
In 2021, Jenny helped create an exhibition for RMIT University. She chose items from the university's art collection and design archives. This show highlighted RMIT's long history of helping designers grow and create.
