Jenny Boyd's Early Life and Career
Helen Mary Boyd was born in Guildford, Surrey, England, in November 1947. Her parents were Diana Frances Boyd and Colin "Jock" Ian Langdon Boyd, who was a pilot.
Becoming a Model and Rock Muse
In the 1960s, Jenny worked as a freelance model. She often went with her sister Pattie to modeling jobs. Through Pattie's relationship with George Harrison of the Beatles, Jenny met many famous British rock bands and musicians. These included the Beatles themselves and groups connected to Eric Clapton. Because she spent time with these musicians, Jenny became known as a "rock muse." This means she inspired artists like Donovan and Mick Jagger to write songs about her.
Working at Apple Boutique
In December 1967, Jenny started working at the Apple Boutique in London. This was a clothing store owned by the Beatles. In early 1968, she traveled to India with Pattie and George Harrison. They went to Rishikesh to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Opening "Jennifer Juniper" Boutique
In July 1968, Jenny and Pattie opened their own shop in London. They named it "Jennifer Juniper" after a song by Donovan. Jenny managed the shop, which sold old and interesting art objects. Pattie was in charge of buying the items for the store.
Writing Songs and Books
Jenny Boyd helped write two songs for the band Fleetwood Mac. However, the band's manager gave the writing credit to her husband, Mick Fleetwood. In the early 1970s, Jenny, Pattie, and their youngest sister Paula were featured in a photo shoot for British Vogue magazine. The famous photographer Patrick Lichfield took their pictures.
Later, Jenny went to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She earned a PhD in psychology. After her studies, she became a manager at a mental health support clinic. She also co-wrote a book called Musicians in Tune, which is about music and psychology. For many years, she managed a mental health support center in England. In 2020, she published her own life story, called Jennifer Juniper.
Jenny Boyd's Personal Life
Even though Donovan's song "Jennifer Juniper" was inspired by Jenny Boyd, they were never in a romantic relationship. Donovan did say he had a crush on her. The song "Jennifer Juniper" was released as a single in March 1968. It also appeared on Donovan's album The Hurdy Gurdy Man later that year.
Jenny Boyd met Mick Fleetwood when she was 15 years old. He was also young and went to her school. At that time, Mick was a drummer in a band called the Bo Street Runners. He later became a co-founder of the famous band Fleetwood Mac. Jenny and Mick had an on-and-off relationship for 15 years. They married in June 1970 and had two daughters, Amelia and Lucy. After they divorced, Jenny married drummer Ian Wallace in 1984, but they later divorced. In 1997, Jenny Boyd married an architect named David Levitt.
