Jens Byggmark (born August 22, 1985) is a former professional alpine ski racer from Sweden. He was a specialist in the technical events, which are slalom and giant slalom. These races require skiers to make many quick, sharp turns.

Byggmark was born in Örebro, Sweden, but he grew up in Tärnaby. He trained with Tärna IK Fjällvinden, a ski club famous for producing many world-class skiers. On his mother's side, he has Sámi heritage. Today, he has two children with his wife, Michaela Delér.

Skiing Career

Jens Byggmark started racing in the World Cup, the highest level of ski racing, in 2005. His most amazing season was in 2007.

Breakthrough Season

In January 2007, Byggmark shocked the skiing world. He won two slalom races in a row at the famous Kitzbühel course in Austria. Winning there is a huge achievement for any skier. Just two days later, he proved it wasn't a fluke by finishing second in another slalom race in Schladming, Austria.

Thanks to these incredible results, he finished the 2007 season ranked 3rd in the world for slalom.

Challenges and Comeback

After his big wins, Byggmark had a few difficult years. He struggled to get top results, which meant he got later start numbers in races. This can be a disadvantage because the snow on the course gets rougher with each skier.

However, he made a strong comeback in the 2011 season. He started skiing fast again and earned a spot in the top group of racers for two seasons. Unfortunately, he had a serious knee injury in September 2013. This injury made him miss the entire 2014 season, including the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Major Competitions

Besides the World Cup, Byggmark competed for Sweden in the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

World Championships

Byggmark competed in five World Championships between 2007 and 2015. He won three silver medals during his career.

  • 2007: He won a silver medal as part of the Swedish team in the team event.
  • 2011: He won a silver medal in the men's slalom, his best individual result at a championship.
  • 2013: He won another silver medal with the Swedish team in the team event.
