Tärnaby is a small town located in Sweden. It's part of the Storuman Municipality in the Lapland province, which is in Västerbotten County. In 2010, about 482 people lived here.
Tärnaby is super famous for its amazing skiers. Many champions, especially in Slalom and Giant Slalom (which are tricky, fast-paced races), come from this town. Some of the most well-known skiers include Ingemar Stenmark, Anja Pärson, Bengt Fjällberg, Stig Strand, and Jens Byggmark.
When winter arrives, Tärnaby turns into a popular ski resort in northern Sweden. But it's not just for winter sports! In summer, the beautiful Laponian lakes and mountains offer lots of fun activities. You can go fishing, canoeing, hiking, or even mountain biking.
Just 18 kilometers north of Tärnaby is the village of Hemavan. It's another ski resort with its own airport. Hemavan is also the starting point for the famous Kungsleden hiking trail, which is a long path through the wilderness.
Discovering Tärnaby's Past
Tärna is one of the newest places in Sweden to have permanent settlements. The very first new building was put up in 1824 at a spot called Lövlund. But even before that, for hundreds of years, the Sami people lived here. They were known for herding reindeer in the area. Scientists have also found Stone Age tools and items around Tärnasjön that are about 9,000 years old! This shows people have been in this region for a very long time.
How Tourism Grew in Tärnaby
The Swedish Tourist Association opened its first tourist station in Tärnaby on July 14, 1927. A special event was held with the county governor (Landshövding) to celebrate. After World War II in the early 1950s, more and more people started visiting Tärnaby. This led to new hotels and ski lifts being built, making it a better place for tourists.
Changes from Hydroelectric Power
In the 1960s, big power plants were built to make electricity from water. These are called hydroelectric power plants. To build them, some farms and fields were flooded with water. The people who owned this land were paid by the local government for their loss. Since 1971, the Tärna area has been part of the larger Storuman Municipality.
