Jeotgalicoccus is a special group, or genus, of tiny living things called bacteria. These bacteria are so small you can only see them with a microscope! They are known as gram-positive bacteria, which is a way scientists classify them based on how their cell walls react to a special stain.
The individual bacteria cells of Jeotgalicoccus are shaped like tiny circles or spheres, which scientists call coccoid. Most types, or species, of Jeotgalicoccus are facultatively anaerobic. This means they are super adaptable and can live both in places where there is oxygen and in places where there isn't any!
These bacteria are also halotolerant to halophilic. This means they can handle salty places, and some even love very salty environments!
What's in a Name?
The name Jeotgalicoccus comes from the Korean fish sauce called jeotgal. This is because these bacteria were first discovered and studied from samples of this traditional Korean food. It's common for scientists to name new discoveries after the place or thing where they were found!
Different Types of Jeotgalicoccus
Within the Jeotgalicoccus genus, there are several different species. Each species is a unique type of Jeotgalicoccus bacteria, even though they share many similarities. Scientists give each species a specific name to tell them apart. Here are some of the known species:
- Jeotgalicoccus aerolatus Martin et al. 2011
- Jeotgalicoccus coquinae Martin et al. 2011
- Jeotgalicoccus halophilus Liu et al. 2011
- Jeotgalicoccus halotolerans Yoon et al. 2003
- Jeotgalicoccus huakuii Guo et al. 2010
- Jeotgalicoccus marinus Chen et al. 2009
- Jeotgalicoccus nanhaiensis Liu et al. 2011
- Jeotgalicoccus pinnipedialis Hoyles et al. 2004
- Jeotgalicoccus psychrophilus Yoon et al. 2003
