John Jeremy Lloyd (22 July 1930 – 23 December 2014) was a talented English writer, scriptwriter, author, poet, and actor. He is best known for co-writing several very popular British sitcoms. These include Are You Being Served? and 'Allo 'Allo!, which many people still enjoy today. He was also awarded an OBE for his work in British comedy.

Early Life and First Jobs

Jeremy Lloyd was born in Danbury, Essex, England. His mother was a dancer, and his father was an engineer. When he was a child, he lived with his grandmother in Manchester and didn't see his parents very often.

In 1943, his father took him out of a private school. After that, Jeremy worked in a menswear shop called Simpsons of Piccadilly. He later said that many of the funny characters in his show Are You Being Served? were inspired by the people he met there. He also worked as a traveling paint salesman. Jeremy believed that these early jobs taught him more than a university could have.

Career in Entertainment

Jeremy Lloyd started his career as a writer in 1958. Two years later, in 1960, he appeared in his first film, School for Scoundrels. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he acted in many film and TV comedies.

He was a regular performer on a popular American TV show called Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In from 1969 to 1970. After finishing that season, he returned to England.

Acting Roles

Jeremy Lloyd had small, uncredited roles in two famous The Beatles films. In A Hard Day's Night (1964), he was a tall man dancing with Ringo Starr. In Help! (1965), he played a restaurant customer. He also appeared in a scene with Peter Sellers in The Magic Christian (1969). In 1967, he played a funny chimney sweep in an episode of The Avengers called "From Venus With Love".

Success as a Writer

Jeremy Lloyd's biggest success as a comedy writer began in 1972 with Are You Being Served?. He worked on this show with David Croft. This sitcom was about the funny staff working in a department store. It became very popular.

Later, he and David Croft created another hit show, 'Allo 'Allo!. This comedy was set during World War II in France and was also very loved by audiences in the UK. They also made a spin-off show from Are You Being Served? called Grace & Favour, which aired in 1992.

In 1980, Jeremy Lloyd wrote the poems and lyrics for the popular Captain Beaky album and books. In 1993, he wrote his own story, an autobiography, titled Listen Very Carefully—I Shall Say this Only Once. This title was a famous line from 'Allo 'Allo!.

In 2013, Jeremy Lloyd was given the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) award. This was to recognize his great contributions to British comedy.
