Jermaine Allensworth's Baseball Journey
Starting His Career
Jermaine Allensworth was first chosen by the California Angels in the 1990 MLB draft. This is when teams pick young players to join their clubs. However, Jermaine decided not to sign with them right away.
Instead, he chose to play college baseball for the Purdue Boilermakers. He was encouraged to go to Purdue by Troy Lewis. In 1992, he played summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers. He was even named an all-star in that league! The next year, in 1993, he was a Big Ten Conference All-Star.
Joining the Major Leagues
After his great college career, the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Jermaine in 1993. He was the 34th player chosen overall that year. He then signed his first professional contract with the Pirates.
In 1996, Jermaine became an All-Star in the Pacific Coast League, which is a minor league. This success led to him being called up to the MLB. He played 61 games for the Pirates that year. He had a batting average of .262, which means he got a hit about 26 out of every 100 times he tried.
He played two more seasons with the Pirates. Then, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. Later that same year, he was sent to the New York Mets. He finished his MLB career playing for the Mets in 1999.
After Major League Baseball
Even after his time in the MLB, Jermaine Allensworth kept playing baseball. He played in the minor leagues for a while longer. After 2002, he took a break from professional baseball for a year.
In 2004, he joined an independent league called the Northern League. He played there for five seasons. His last team in that league was the Schaumburg Flyers in 2008. In 2007, he helped lead his team, the Gary SouthShore RailCats, to win the League Championship!
