A Look Back: Jermyn's History
Jermyn was started in 1902. It was one of the last communities to be built in Jack County. The community got its name from J. J. Jermyn. He was the son of Joe Jermyn, a very successful coal businessman from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
How Jermyn Started
Two ranchers from Jack County, Oliver Loving and W. P. Stewart, gave the land for the town. On October 21, 1909, the Gulf, Texas and Western Railroad tracks reached Jermyn. This was a big deal because it helped the community grow.
Jermyn's Growth and Changes
In the 1920s, Jermyn had several shops, a bank, and a church. About 213 people lived there. It became an important place for the local cattle business. It was also a shipping point, meaning goods were sent out from there. The number of people living in Jermyn grew to 1,066 by 1968. However, after that, the population started to get smaller. By 1990 and 2000, only 75 people lived in Jermyn.
A Special Event
On June 14, 1984, the 1984 Summer Olympics torch relay passed through Jermyn. This was a special moment for the community. Also, an early settler named James C. Loving made Jermyn his home in 1873.
