About Jerome Kavka
Jerome Kavka was born in the United States. His parents had moved there from Poland. He grew up in Chicago and went to Marshall High School. After high school, he studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned both his first degree and his medical degree to become a doctor.
Helping a Famous Poet
Right after World War II, when Dr. Kavka was a young intern (a doctor in training) at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., he treated a famous poet named Ezra Pound. Pound was facing serious legal problems. Dr. Kavka spent about four months observing and talking with Pound.
Dr. Kavka's observations were very important. They helped show that Pound was struggling with his mental health. Because of Dr. Kavka's work, Pound was able to avoid a very harsh punishment. Dr. Kavka later wrote a lot about Pound's mental state, and his writings are still very important for people who study Ezra Pound's life and work.
Dr. Kavka's Career
Dr. Kavka's internship was cut short because he was asked to join the US Army as a physician. After serving his country, he finished his medical training at the Cook County Hospital.
In 1966, Dr. Kavka joined the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He became known for his unique and creative ideas. He often thought outside the usual ways of doing things in psychoanalysis, which made him a respected and interesting figure in his field.
