Terrah Jerrod Mustaf (born October 28, 1969 – died October 28, 2024) was an American professional basketball player. He was known for his skills on the court. In high school, he was named a Parade All-American three times. He also played in important all-star games.
Mustaf played four seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was chosen 17th in the 1990 NBA draft. After playing in the NBA, Mustaf moved to Europe. There, he continued his professional basketball career. When he returned to the United States, Mustaf worked to help young people. He supported many good causes in Maryland.
Early Life and High School
Jerrod Mustaf was born in Whiteville, North Carolina. His mother, Lilly Mae George, raised him there. When he was 14, Jerrod moved to Maryland. He went to live with his father, Shaar Mustaf.
His father was an activist who worked for his community. He greatly influenced Jerrod's life. His father encouraged him to become a leader. He also taught him to help others. Jerrod played basketball at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. He was one of the most sought-after players in his final year of high school. Many colleges wanted him to play for their teams.
Basketball Career
With his father's encouragement, Jerrod decided to play college basketball for the Maryland Terrapins. He played in 59 games for Maryland. He scored an average of 16.6 points per game. During the 1989-90 season, he scored 609 points in 33 games.
After two seasons at Maryland, Mustaf decided to enter the 1990 NBA draft. This is where professional teams choose new players.
The New York Knicks picked Mustaf as the 17th player overall. He played in the NBA from 1990 to 1994. He played for the Knicks and the Phoenix Suns. He also briefly played for the Seattle SuperSonics. After his time in the NBA, he moved to Europe. There, he continued his professional basketball career. He also signed with the Charlotte Hornets for a short time in 1996.
Mustaf retired from basketball in 2001. His last team was Altay Kartal Makarna in the Turkish Basketball League.
Community Work and Activism
After his basketball career, Mustaf dedicated himself to helping others. In Maryland, he led the Take Charge program. This was a non-profit group started by his father. Its goal was to help young people stay out of trouble.
He continued to work with young people who were at risk. He also ran basketball camps for them. He did this for the rest of his life. In 2006, he was named Sports Ambassador of Gambia. In this role, he worked to help basketball grow in that country.
In 2008, he became the Director of Athletic Development at Laurinburg Institute. Later, Mustaf became the CEO and president of the Street Basketball Association. This organization was based in Mitchellville, Maryland.
Death
Jerrod Mustaf passed away on October 28, 2024. It was his 55th birthday.
