Jerry Ward (born July 19, 1948) is an American politician and businessman. He has served in the Alaska state government.

Early Life and Career

Jerry Ward was born in Anchorage, Alaska. His family has lived in Alaska for a very long time. When he was younger, Ward served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was part of the Navy's "Seabees," who are like construction workers for the Navy. After his time in the military, Ward worked in the business of buying and selling land and buildings.

Serving in the House of Representatives

In 1982, Ward was chosen by voters to join the Alaska House of Representatives. He was a member of the Republican political party. He served in this role from 1983 to 1985.

Running for Lieutenant Governor

In 1990, Ward tried to become the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. This is the second-highest leader in the state government. He won a special election within the Alaska Independence Party. However, he and his running mate, who was running for governor, decided to step aside. They did this so that former Governor Walter Hickel could run instead. Hickel and his running mate won the main election that year.

Time in the State Senate

Later, Jerry Ward ran for the Alaska State Senate. He was successful in his elections in both 1996 and 2000. This meant he served several terms as a state senator.

In 1998, Ward ran for Lieutenant Governor again. He was the running mate for a Republican candidate for governor. However, they did not win the election.

Later Elections and Public Service

In 2002, Ward tried to get re-elected to the State Senate but lost to Tom Wagoner. He ran against Wagoner again in 2004 but lost once more.

During his time in the state senate, Ward was involved in discussions about building more prisons in Alaska.

In 2006, Ward ran for Lieutenant Governor again in the Republican primary election. He was defeated by Sean Parnell.

In 2016, Jerry Ward helped manage Donald Trump's presidential campaign in Alaska. After Trump became president, Ward was given a job in the Department of Education. He resigned from this position not long after.
