A Brief History of Jersey
Before 1904, this community was called Centerville. It got this name because it was almost exactly in the middle of four nearby towns: Monroe, Social Circle, Covington, and Loganville.
How Jersey Got Its Name
The people of Centerville wanted their own U.S. Post Office. This would make it easier to send and receive mail without traveling far. However, there was a problem: another town in Georgia already had the name Centerville. Federal rules said two towns in the same state couldn't have the same name.
This led to a big discussion in the community. At the time, the area was famous for its excellent dairy farms and high-quality milk. A local businessman, H. D. Ambercrombie, had just brought a special Jersey bull from the European Isle of Jersey. He hoped this bull would help improve his dairy herd and produce even more milk.
After a lot of talking, the town decided to change its name to "Jersey." This new name allowed them to get their own unique postal address and open a U.S. Post Office. The Georgia General Assembly officially made Jersey a town in 1905.

Education in Jersey
For many years, up until the early 1960s, the town of Jersey had its own local school. Most of the teachers lived in the area and knew the students and their families very well. Some teachers had even gone to Jersey's school themselves! They sometimes taught multiple generations from the same families.
Changes in Local Schools
In 1962, the local school in Jersey closed. This happened because there were fewer school-aged children in the town. Also, there was a trend to combine smaller local schools into larger ones. After the school closed, most students transferred to the Social Circle Public Schools. Some teachers retired, while a few others moved to teach at different schools.
Today, Jersey is part of the Walton County School District. While most students attend public schools in this district, some families choose to send their children to private schools in the area.
