Jersey Mills is a small, unincorporated community located in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

The community sits right along Pine Creek, a beautiful waterway within the Pine Creek Gorge. It's found upstream from Waterville and can be reached by Pennsylvania Route 414. A smaller stream called Callahan Run also joins Pine Creek here. The famous Pine Creek Rail Trail, a popular path for biking and walking, goes right through Jersey Mills.

The Story of Jersey Mills

Early Settlers and Lumbering

The first European settlers arrived in the Jersey Mills area in the late 1700s and early 1800s. For about 100 years, the main ways people made a living were through lumbering (cutting down trees for wood) and farming.

The very first lumber mill in the area started working in 1809. Farmers grew crops like grains and potatoes to feed their families and sell. The village of Jersey Mills officially got its name in 1855 when a post office was opened there.

Changes Over Time

As the lumber industry started to slow down, people in Jersey Mills found new ways to earn money. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, flagstone quarries became important. Flagstone is a type of flat stone used for paving and building.

Jersey Mills had a one-room school where children learned until 1946. There was also a general store and a place for travelers to stay (a boarding house) until 1965. The last business in the community was a smaller general store, which operated from 1980 until 2007.
