Jerónimo Balbás was a famous architect and sculptor from Spain. He lived and worked during the 1700s, which is also known as the 18th century. Balbás was known for his amazing work in a style called Baroque architecture, which is very fancy and detailed.

He created beautiful religious art for churches. One of his most important works was a large altarpiece for the tabernacle of the Seville Cathedral in Spain. Sadly, this beautiful piece was destroyed in 1824.

Moving to Mexico

In 1718, Jerónimo Balbás moved to Mexico. There, he continued his work as an architect and sculptor. He became very well-known for his Baroque designs.

Famous Works in Mexico

One of his most famous creations in Mexico is the Altar of Forgiveness. This incredible altar is located inside the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. It shows off his unique and detailed Baroque style.

Balbás also worked on parts of other cathedrals in Spain and Mexico. His designs helped shape the look of many important churches during his time.

Jerónimo Balbás left behind a lasting impact on architecture and sculpture. His work helped define the Baroque style in both Spain and Mexico. Even though some of his pieces are gone, his influence can still be seen in the buildings he helped design.
