Early Life and Career
Jesús Caldera started his career in the early 1980s. He worked in local government in the Salamanca Province as a city manager. This role involves helping to run a city or town.
In 1982, he became a member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This is like being a representative in the Spanish parliament. He represented the Salamanca Province.
Later, when José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero became the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Jesús Caldera was chosen for an important role. From 2000 to 2004, he was the main spokesperson for the Socialist group in the Congress.
Minister of Labor and Social Issues
After his party won the elections in March 2004, President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero asked Jesús Caldera to lead the Ministry of Labor and Social Issues. He took on this job on April 18, 2004. During his time as minister, he helped create more than twenty important agreements about work and social issues.
Key Changes in Labor
As Minister, Jesús Caldera made several important changes:
- He increased the minimum wage, which is the lowest amount of money workers can be paid, to 600 euros per month.
- He worked with different groups, like worker unions and businesses, to make changes to labor laws. These changes helped create more stable jobs and improved payments for people who needed them most.
- He also made it harder for people to retire very early, which helped make sure the social security system would be strong in the future.
- He introduced rules for independent workers, like freelancers.
- He also put a plan in place to make workplaces safer and reduce accidents.
Key Social Changes
Jesús Caldera also focused on social improvements:
- He created a new right for people who needed help because they couldn't take care of themselves easily.
- He increased paternity leave, which is time off for new fathers, from four days to fifteen days.
- His ministry was also in charge of policies about immigration. They worked with different groups to help more than half a million immigrants become legal residents.
Ideas Foundation for Progress
After leaving his role as Minister of Labor in April 2008, Jesús Caldera took on a new project. He helped create and lead a large "think tank" called the IDEAS Foundation for progress. A think tank is a group that does research and comes up with new ideas.
The goal of this foundation was to develop new ideas and projects for the Socialist party. This helped the party stay up-to-date with changes in society and offer new solutions to problems.
