Jesus Lopez Castanon (born March 4, 1973) is a famous Mexican jockey. A jockey is a person who rides horses in horse races. Jesus Castanon is known for winning the 2011 Preakness Stakes, one of the biggest races in the United States.
He was born in Mexico City, Mexico. His father was a horse trainer, and two of his brothers also became jockeys in Mexico. Jesus Castanon is married to Rolanda Simpson, who was also a jockey.
Jesus Castanon started his racing career early. He won his first race in 1989 at the Agua Caliente Racetrack. Later that same year, he won the Torrey Pines Stakes in the United States at Del Mar Racetrack in California. Since then, he has raced all over the United States and even in Canada. He has won more than 2,000 races in his career!
Winning the Triple Crown Race
In 2011, Jesus Castanon competed in the U.S. Triple Crown series. This series includes three very important horse races.
The Kentucky Derby
On May 7, 2011, Jesus Castanon rode a horse named Shackleford. They finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. This was the first race of the Triple Crown series.
The Preakness Stakes Victory
Just two weeks later, on May 21, Jesus Castanon and Shackleford raced again. This time, they won the Preakness Stakes! This was the second race in the Triple Crown series. Winning the Preakness Stakes is a huge achievement for any jockey.
