Jesús Ildefonso Díaz is a Spanish mathematician. He is known for his work on partial differential equations. These are special math problems that help describe how things change in the world. He teaches as a professor at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He is also a member of the important Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.

About His Life
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz was born in Toledo, Spain on December 11, 1950. He studied mathematics at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He earned his first degree in 1973. Later, he completed his PhD from the same university in 1976. His main teachers for his PhD were Alberto Dou and Haïm Brezis.
His Work and Career
Díaz started teaching at UCM in 1978. He became a full professor there in 1983. In the early 1980s, he helped start the Department of Applied Mathematics at UCM. He led this department for many years.
He also helped create the Revista Matemática de la UCM, a math journal, in 1998. From 2006 to 2008, and again from 2012 to 2016, he was the Director of the Instituto de Matemática Interdisciplinar (IMI). This institute helps different areas of math work together. He is also known as a very energetic teacher. He organized many summer courses at UCM.
Díaz has worked on many types of applied mathematics. This includes studying nonlinear partial differential equations. He also worked on math models for fluid mechanics (how liquids and gases move). Other areas include geophysical models (about Earth's physical processes) and models for elasticity (how things stretch and bend).
He has written over 250 papers for research journals. He has also written seven books and many book chapters. He has worked with more than 175 other researchers. Since 1979, he has guided 20 students to complete their PhDs in mathematics.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz has received several important awards:
- 2015: He won the Grand Prix Jacques-Louis Lions de Mathematique Apliquée. This award is from the French Academy of Sciences.
- 1997: He became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.
- 1996: He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour in France.
- 1980: He won the Mathematics Prize from the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.
His Role in Math Societies
Díaz played a big part in organizing the Spanish Congress of Differential Equations and Applications. This was an important yearly meeting for mathematicians in Spain. In 1991, he helped create the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA). He was the society's Secretary and later its second President.
He also helped restart the Spanish Royal Society of Mathematics in 1997. As a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, he worked to make the academy more modern. He started the mathematics section of the Journal of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, Series A Mathematics. He was the main editor for this journal from 2001 to 2005.
Thanks to his efforts, the word modelizar was added to the official Spanish Dictionary. This word is the correct Spanish translation for the English word modelling.
International Connections
Because of his work to connect Spanish and French mathematicians, he was invited to teach at many French universities. These include universities in Toulouse, Nancy, and Paris. He also organized several joint meetings between French and Spanish mathematicians.
He has also been a visiting professor in the USA and Italy. In 1995, he organized a big international meeting. It was about the mathematics of models for climate and the environment. From 2009 to 2013, he was the European Coordinator for a large European math program called FIRST. This program involved activities in 11 countries.
Editorial Boards
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz has served on the editorial boards of several important math journals. This means he helps decide which research papers get published. From 2003 to 2014, he was the only Spanish person on the editorial board of the Journal of the European Mathematical Society. He also serves on the boards of:
- Advances in Mathematical Science and Applications (since 1991)
- Revista de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales de Madrid (since 1996)
- Electronic Differential Equations Journal (since 2001)
- Differential and Integral Equations (since 2001)
- Electronic Journal of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (since 2002)
- Journal of the European Mathematical Society (since 2003)
- The Annals of the University of Craiova - Mathematics and Computer Science (since 2006)
- Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications (since 2010)
- Differential Equations and Applications (DEA) (since 2011)
- Abstract and Applied Analysis (since July 2012)
60th Birthday Celebration
To celebrate Díaz's 60th birthday, a special international conference was held. It was called "Non-linear models in partial differential equations." The meeting took place from June 14-17, 2011, in Toledo, Spain. This is the city where he was born. Many famous mathematicians attended and spoke at the event. Two special issues of the journal Differential Equations and Applications were dedicated to the papers presented at this meeting. ISSN 1847-120X.
