Biography
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz was born in Toledo, Spain on December 11, 1950. He loved math and finished his math degree at UCM in 1973. He then earned his PhD from the same university in 1976. His teachers for his PhD were Alberto Dou and Haïm Brezis.
Career and Contributions
Díaz started teaching at UCM in 1978. He became a full professor there in 1983. In the early 1980s, he started the Department of Applied Mathematics at UCM. He led this department for many years.
He also helped start the Revista Matemática de la UCM journal in 1998. From 2006 to 2008, and again from 2012 to 2016, he directed the Instituto de Matemática Interdisciplinar (IMI). He is known for being a very active teacher. He organized many summer courses at UCM.
Research Areas
Díaz has worked on many types of applied mathematics. This includes studying nonlinear partial differential equations. He also worked on models for fluid mechanics and geophysical systems. Other areas include reaction-diffusion models and elasticity. He also studied control theory models.
He has also explored areas closer to pure mathematics. This includes nonlinear analysis. He has written over 250 research papers. He also contributed to 7 books and 8 book chapters. He has worked with more than 175 other researchers. He has guided 20 students to earn their PhDs.
Awards and Honors
- 2015: He received the Grand Prix Jacques-Louis Lions de Mathematique Apliquée. This award is from the Académie des Sciences in France.
- 1997: He became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.
- 1996: He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour.
- 1980: He won the Mathematics Prize from the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.
Scientific Organizations
Díaz played a big part in organizing the Spanish Congress of Differential Equations and Applications. This was an annual meeting held from 1978 to 1987. He helped create the Sociedad Española de Matemática Aplicada (SEMA). He was the secretary from 1991 to 1994. Then he was president from 1994 to 1995.
He also helped restart the Spanish Royal Society of Mathematics in 1997. As a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, he worked to update its activities. He started the math section of the Journal of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, Series A Mathematics. He was its main editor from 2001 to 2005. He also helped connect the Spanish and French Academies of Sciences.
He even helped make sure the word modelizar was added to the Spanish Official Dictionary. This word is the correct Spanish translation for "modelling."
International Connections
Because of his efforts to connect Spanish and French mathematicians, he was invited to teach at many French universities. These included universities in Toulouse, Nancy, and Paris. He also organized several joint congresses between France and Spain.
He is an honorary member of the Mathematics Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the USA. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Rome II and the University of L'Aquila in Italy. In 1995, he organized a big meeting about math models for climate and environment.
From 2009 to 2013, he was the European Coordinator for a program called FIRST. This program worked in 11 countries.
Editorial Boards
Jesús Ildefonso Díaz has been part of the editorial boards for many important math journals. From 2003 to 2014, he was the only Spanish person on the board of the Journal of the European Mathematical Society. He also serves on the boards of:
- Advances in Mathematical Science and Applications (since 1991)
- Revista de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales de Madrid (since 1996)
- Electronic Differential Equations Journal (since 2001)
- Differential and Integral Equations (since 2001)
- Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications (since 2010)
60th Birthday Celebration
An international conference was held to celebrate Díaz's 60th birthday. It was called "Non-linear models in partial differential equations." The meeting took place in Toledo, Spain, in June 2011. Many famous mathematicians attended. Special issues of the journal Differential Equations and Applications were dedicated to the meeting.
