Jesse Hughes (frontiersman) facts for kids

Jesse Hughes (born around 1750 – died around 1829) was a brave frontiersman, a skilled hunter, and a helpful scout. He was one of the very first settlers in the western parts of Virginia. These areas later became the states of West Virginia and Kentucky.

Early Life and Family

Jesse Hughes was born around 1750. He married Grace Tanner in 1771. Together, they had two daughters named Martha and Massie, and a son named James Stanley.

Jesse and his family lived in a simple cabin near a place called Hacker's Creek. There was also a small stream nearby that is now known as "Jesse's Run." This area is located in what we know today as Lewis County, West Virginia.

Life on the American frontier in the late 1700s was very challenging. Settlers like Jesse Hughes needed to be tough and resourceful. They had to hunt for food, build their homes, and protect themselves in a wild landscape.
