Jewel Belair Staite (born June 2, 1982) is a Canadian actress. She is famous for playing Kaylee Frye in the TV series Firefly (2002–2003) and its movie Serenity (2005). She also played Jennifer Keller in the science fiction show Stargate Atlantis (2007–2009).

Jewel Staite has also starred as Catalina in Space Cases (1996) and as "Becca" Fisher in Flash Forward (1996–1997). Later, she was Raquel Westbrook in the Canadian drama The L.A. Complex (2012). From 2013 to 2014, she played Caroline Swift in the crime drama The Killing. Since 2021, she has been Abigail Bianchi in the Canadian legal drama Family Law.

Early Life and Acting Beginnings

Jewel Staite was born in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada. She is the youngest of seven children. Jewel started modeling when she was very young and began acting at age six.

She has shared that her family comes from different backgrounds, including British, Irish, French Canadian, and Iroquois roots. Jewel studied acting at the Vancouver Film School and also worked at the Vancouver Youth Theatre.

Career Highlights

Jewel Staite's first big roles as a child actor were in TV movies. These included Liar, Liar in 1993 and The Only Way Out. In 1995, she had an important guest role in an episode of The X-Files called "Oubliette".

Early TV Roles

After appearing on Are You Afraid of the Dark? in 1994, Jewel got her first main role. She played Catalina, the ship's engineer, in the first season of the Nickelodeon science fiction series Space Cases in 1996.

Right after that, she starred as Rebecca "Becca" Fisher in the Disney Channel series Flash Forward from 1995 to 1997. In this show, Jewel shared the lead role with Ben Foster.

In 2000, she got a main role in the drama series Higher Ground. Jewel also used her voice for animated TV shows like Mummies Alive! and Sabrina: The Animated Series.

Firefly and Serenity

Jewel Staite became widely known for her role as Kaylee Frye in the science fiction TV series Firefly. Even though the show was short-lived, it gained a huge fan following. She later returned as Kaylee in the 2005 movie Serenity, which continued the story of Firefly.

She even wrote a chapter in a book called Finding Serenity. Her chapter was titled "Kaylee Speaks: Jewel Staite On Firefly", sharing her thoughts on the character and the show.

Stargate Atlantis and Other Projects

Jewel Staite played Dr. Jennifer Keller, the head medical doctor, in the show Stargate Atlantis. This show was a spin-off from Stargate SG-1. She first appeared in a recurring role in season four and became a main cast member in season five. Before playing Dr. Keller, she also appeared in an earlier Stargate Atlantis episode as a different character, Ellia.

In 2010, Jewel starred in the Syfy movie Mothman. She also made guest appearances in other popular TV shows. In 2010, she was in an episode of Warehouse 13. In 2011, she guest-starred in an episode of Supernatural.

Recent Work

In 2012, Jewel Staite was a regular cast member on The L.A. Complex. She played Raquel Westbrook, an actress trying to make it big. From 2013 to 2014, she appeared in 10 episodes of the crime drama The Killing. In this show, she played Caroline Swift, who was Detective Stephen Holder's girlfriend.

Since 2021, Jewel Staite has been starring as Abigail Bianchi in the Canadian legal drama series Family Law.

Personal Life

Jewel Staite was married to Matt Anderson from 2003 to 2011. In 2015, she got engaged to her boyfriend, Charlie Ritchie. Later that year, she announced she was expecting her first child, a boy, who was born in 2015. Jewel and Charlie got married on July 23, 2016.
