Jewel Cianeh Taylor (born Jewel Cianeh Howard on January 17, 1963) is a politician from Liberia. She served as the 30th Vice President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024. Before that, she was married to Charles Taylor, who was president of Liberia from 1997 to 2003. During his time as president, she was the First Lady of Liberia. In 2005, Jewel Taylor was elected to the Senate of Liberia to represent Bong County. She was also in charge of the Senate's Health and Social Welfare Committee, focusing on gender, women, and children's issues.

Jewel Taylor's Life and Career

While her husband was president, Jewel Taylor held several important jobs in the Liberian government. She was a Deputy Governor at the National Bank of Liberia, which is now called the Central Bank of Liberia. She also served as the President of the Agriculture Cooperative and Development Bank (ACDB). Additionally, she worked as a Mortgage Financing Underwriter at the First Union National Bank. Beyond her official roles, she spent time working on projects related to education, health, and social welfare.

Education and Studies

Jewel Taylor has earned several college degrees. She holds a special degree in banking and two bachelor's degrees in banking and economics. She also studied law and graduated from the Louise Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia in December 2011. At one point, she was studying for her MBA (Master of Business Administration) at Cuttington University in Liberia.

In December 2011, there was some discussion in Bong County about an honorary title she supposedly received. She was announced as the new "Madam Suakoko," a special title that honors the namesake of the Suakoko District. However, some people from the group that was said to have given her the title later said that the award was not officially given by their group. They explained that the meeting was actually meant to help people in the county resolve political differences.

Becoming Vice President

In 2017, George Weah chose Jewel Taylor to be his running mate for the newly formed Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) party. After a second round of voting in late 2017, their party won the elections. This made Jewel Taylor the first female Vice President of Liberia. She served in this role until January 2024.

Health During Service

In 2020, Jewel Taylor became sick with COVID-19. She was flown to Ghana to receive medical treatment for her illness.
