Jhon Hurtado's Football Journey
Starting His Professional Career
Jhon Hurtado began his football journey in the youth teams of Deportivo Cali. In 2004, he started playing professionally with Unión Magdalena. He played in many matches across Colombia's top two football divisions. In 2005, Hurtado played for Monagas in Venezuela. The next year, he returned to Colombia to play for Centauros. He also played for Expreso Rojo and Real Cartagena in 2007. In 2008, he was back with Deportivo Cali.
Playing in Major League Soccer
Jhon Hurtado was known for his amazing speed on the field. He even had a tryout with the famous Italian team Milan. Later, he joined Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer (MLS) on loan. A coach from Sounders FC, Chris Henderson, said Jhon was fast and good at tackling.
Hurtado played his first MLS game on March 19, 2009. Seattle won that game 3-0 against the New York Red Bulls. On his 25th birthday, May 16, 2009, he scored his first MLS goal. This helped his team get a 1-1 tie against FC Dallas. In 2010, Hurtado signed a permanent deal with Seattle Sounders FC. He played 108 league games for the team and scored one goal. While playing for Seattle, his team won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three years in a row. He left the club in early 2014.
Moving to Other Teams
On January 15, 2014, Hurtado was traded from Seattle Sounders to the Chicago Fire. Another player, Patrick Ianni, also moved with him. In return, Seattle received other players and draft picks. Hurtado played 19 games for Chicago.
Later in 2014, on August 22, he was traded again. This time, he went to Chivas USA. He played six games for Chivas USA. In December 2015, it was announced that he had a tryout with another MLS team, New York City FC.
Jhon Hurtado's Family Life
Jhon Hurtado is married to Daysury. They have a son named Paolo, who was born on June 19, 2009. When Paolo was born, Hurtado missed a game against the New York Red Bulls. His teammates, Fredy Montero and Osvaldo Alonso, celebrated Paolo's birth with messages on their t-shirts. Jhon and Fredy Montero are good friends. They first met when they played for Deportivo Cali and often traveled to practice together.
In December 2010, Jhon Hurtado received a U.S. green card. This meant he was considered a local player for MLS teams.
