Jhon Kennedy Hurtado's Football Journey
Starting in Colombia
Jhon Kennedy Hurtado began his football career in the youth teams of Deportivo Cali in Colombia. In 2004, he started playing professionally with Unión Magdalena. He played in over 120 matches in Colombia's top two football leagues. In 2005, he also played for Monagas in Venezuela. He then returned to Colombia, playing for teams like Centauros, Expreso Rojo, and Real Cartagena.
Playing in Major League Soccer
Hurtado was known for his incredible speed on the field. He even had a tryout with the famous Italian club Milan. In 2009, he joined Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS, first on a loan from Deportivo Cali. A "loan" means a player temporarily plays for another team.
He made his MLS debut on March 19, 2009, in Seattle's very first game. The Sounders won that game 3-0 against the New York Red Bulls. On his 25th birthday, May 16, 2009, Hurtado scored his first MLS goal against FC Dallas.
In 2010, Hurtado signed a permanent deal with Seattle Sounders FC. He played 108 league games for the team. During his time in Seattle, the team won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three years in a row (2009, 2010, and 2011). This is a big tournament for football clubs in the United States.
Moving to New Teams
In 2014, Hurtado was traded from Seattle Sounders FC to the Chicago Fire. A trade means players are exchanged between teams. He played 19 games for Chicago. Later that year, he was traded again to Chivas USA.
In 2015, Hurtado had a tryout with another MLS team, New York City FC.
Life Off the Field
Jhon Kennedy Hurtado is married to Daysury, and they have a son named Paolo, who was born on June 19, 2009. When Paolo was born, Hurtado missed a game against the New York Red Bulls. His teammates, Fredy Montero and Osvaldo Alonso, celebrated Paolo's birth with special t-shirt messages during the game. Hurtado and Fredy Montero were good friends and often traveled to practice together.
In December 2010, Hurtado received a U.S. green card. This special status meant he was considered a "domestic player" for MLS teams. This is important because teams have limits on how many international players they can have.
Awards and Trophies
Jhon Kennedy Hurtado won several important awards during his career:
Seattle Sounders FC
- Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (3): 2009, 2010, 2011
