He helped China become a leader in this field. He was also a respected member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Early Life and School
Ji Guobiao was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, in March 1932. He went to Donglin Academy and Furen High School. In 1949, he started studying at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He studied how to manage factories and how to dye and treat textiles.
In 1951, he moved to a new school, the East China Institute of Textile Science and Technology. This school is now known as Donghua University. During his time at university, he joined a youth group called the New Democratic Youth League.
A Career in Chemical Fibers
After finishing university, Ji Guobiao started working at a printing and dyeing factory in Qingdao. He taught himself a lot about chemical fibers while working there. In 1954, he joined the Communist Party of China. That same year, the government sent him to study abroad.
When he came back to China, he became a technical director at a chemical fiber factory in Baoding. In 1958, he went to Japan with a famous chemist named Hou Debang. They studied how to make fertilizers and fibers.
Later, in 1963, he moved to Nanjing Chemical Fiber Plant. He became a deputy chief engineer there. In 1965, he helped start the Lanzhou Chemical Fiber Plant. He also studied how to make synthetic fibers in the United Kingdom.
During a difficult time in China called the Cultural Revolution, Ji Guobiao faced challenges. However, in 1973, he began working for the government's textile industry department. In 1978, he helped create a big company called Yizheng Chemical Fiber. He was a main leader and chief engineer there.
By 1980, he was in charge of the Chemical Fiber Department for the Ministry of Textile Industry. He was promoted to vice-minister in 1984. In 1994, he was chosen as a top expert in engineering. This made him an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2003, Donghua University started a new institute for modern textiles, and Ji Guobiao became its first leader.
Later Life and Passing
Ji Guobiao passed away in Beijing, China, on 5 September 2019. He was 87 years old.
