Jicarilla is a fascinating ghost town located in Lincoln County, New Mexico. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, leaving behind empty buildings. Jicarilla became a busy place, known as a boomtown, in 1892. This happened after people found lots of gold and coal in the nearby Jicarilla Mountains.

Today, not much is left standing in Jicarilla. It was an active community for about 50 years, from 1892 to 1942.

The Story of Jicarilla

Jicarilla started to grow quickly in 1892. This was the same year a post office opened there. A post office was very important for a town to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open until 1927.

The town got its name from the Jicarilla Apache Nation. This Native American group lived in the area for a long time.

The Old Schoolhouse
