Jill Balcon's first movie role was in Nicholas Nickleby in 1947. She also became popular on radio. On 3 January 1948, she was on a BBC radio show called Time for Verse. People loved her voice, describing it as "rich, expressive, [and] finely modulated."
That same night, the poet Cecil Day-Lewis also appeared on the show. He was 21 years older than Jill. Later that year, Jill worked with the Bristol Old Vic theatre group for a season.
