James Turner Brewer (born December 3, 1951) is a former American National Basketball Association (NBA) player. He was known for his strong defense and rebounding skills.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Jim Brewer grew up in Maywood, Illinois. He became a very important player at Proviso East High School. This school is famous for having one of the best high school basketball teams in Illinois.

In 1969, Jim Brewer played as the center for his high school team. He helped lead them to win their first state championship. Many other future NBA players also came from Proviso East after him. These players include Doc Rivers, Michael Finley, Dee Brown, Shannon Brown, Sterling Brown, and Jevon Carter.

College Career and Olympic Experience

After high school, Brewer went to the University of Minnesota. He played basketball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. One of his teammates there was Dave Winfield, who later became famous in baseball.

In 1972, Jim Brewer played for the United States in the 1972 Summer Olympics. His team played against the Soviet Union in the gold medal game. This game was very controversial. During the game, Brewer was injured and could not keep playing. The U.S. team lost the game in a very close finish.

Playing in the NBA

After the Olympics, the Cleveland Cavaliers chose Jim Brewer in the 1973 NBA draft. He was the second player picked overall in the draft.

When Brewer scored a basket at a Cavaliers home game, the announcer would famously say, "Two for the Brew!" He played nine seasons in the NBA, from 1973 to 1982. During his NBA career, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers. He won an NBA championship with the Lakers in 1982. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team twice.

Playing in Italy

After his time in the NBA, Jim Brewer went to play basketball in Italy. He joined a team called Pallacanestro Cantù in the Italian Serie A league.

While playing in Italy, he achieved more success. He helped his team win a Euroleague championship in 1983. They also reached the finals of the Intercontinental Cup.

Family and Legacy

Jim Brewer has a famous family connection in basketball. He is the uncle of Glenn "Doc" Rivers, who was also an NBA player and is now a head coach. Jim is also the great-uncle of Doc's son, Austin Rivers, who played as an NBA point guard.

In 2007, the Illinois High School Association honored Jim Brewer. They named him one of the "100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament." This shows how important he was to high school basketball in Illinois.
