James Turner Brewer (born December 3, 1951) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Jim Brewer was known for his strong defense and rebounding skills. He played for several teams during his career. These included the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Early Life and High School Success

Jim Brewer grew up in Maywood, Illinois. He became a star player at Proviso East High School. This school is famous for its successful basketball teams.

In 1969, Jim led his high school team to win their first state championship. He was a center on the team. Many other future NBA players also came from Proviso East. These include Doc Rivers, Michael Finley, and Shannon Brown.

College Career at Minnesota

After high school, Jim Brewer went to the University of Minnesota. He played basketball for the Golden Gophers. One of his teammates was Dave Winfield. Dave later became a famous baseball player.

During a game in 1972, a big fight happened. Jim Brewer was involved in this incident. It was a difficult moment for the team.

Olympic Games Experience

Jim Brewer was part of the United States basketball team in the 1972 Summer Olympics. The team played in the gold medal game against the Soviet Union. This game was very controversial.

During the game, Jim was injured by a Soviet player. He could not continue playing. The United States team lost the game in a very close and disputed finish. They received the silver medal.

Professional NBA Career

After the Olympics, the Cleveland Cavaliers picked Jim Brewer in the 1973 NBA draft. He was the second player chosen overall.
