James Anthony Sturgess (born on May 16, 1978) is an English actor and singer-songwriter. He became well-known for his role as Jude in the musical romance film Across the Universe (2007). He also played the main character, Ben Campbell, in 21 (2008) and appeared in the science fiction movie Cloud Atlas (2012). Jim Sturgess has been in many other films and TV shows, showing his talent in different kinds of stories.

About Jim Sturgess
Early Life and Education
Jim Sturgess was born in Wandsworth, London, England. He grew up in Farnham, Surrey, where he went to Frensham Heights School. When he was younger, he loved skateboarding and listening to hip-hop music. He started his first band around age 15, playing music in his local area. His first experience with acting was in a local theater group after he successfully tried out for a play.
Sturgess later moved to Manchester to study at the University of Salford. He graduated in 1999 with a degree in Media and Performance. After finishing university, he moved to London. While looking for acting jobs and writing music, he worked in a shop that sold trainers. On July 30, 2019, Jim Sturgess married theatre producer Dina Mousawi in Italy. Their son was born in 2020.

Jim Sturgess has had many interesting roles throughout his acting career.
Early Film Roles
In 2007, he starred as Jude Feeny in the musical film Across the Universe. In this movie, his character travels to the US in the 1960s and falls in love. In 2008, he was in the historical drama The Other Boleyn Girl, playing George Boleyn. He acted alongside famous stars like Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.
Also in 2008, he played the main role of Ben Campbell in 21. This film is about a group of students who use their math skills to win at games in Las Vegas. He also appeared in Fifty Dead Men Walking (2009).
Notable Performances
In 2009, Sturgess played Gavin Kossef in Crossing Over, a film about people trying to gain legal status in Los Angeles. He also starred in Heartless, a horror film where he played Jamie Morgan, a young man dealing with a birthmark on his face. For this role, Jim Sturgess won the Best Actor Award at the 2010 Fantasporto Film Festival.
In 2010, Sturgess starred in The Way Back, a film based on a true story about a young Polish officer who escaped from a prison camp during World War II. He also lent his voice to the animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, playing Soren, the main owl character.
Recent Projects
In 2011, he played Dexter Mayhew in One Day, a film about two friends who meet on the same day each year for 20 years. In 2012, he took on six different roles in the science fiction film Cloud Atlas, working with Tom Hanks.
He continued to work on various films, including The Best Offer (2013) and Stonehearst Asylum (2014). In 2015, he played Dutch criminal Cor van Hout in Kidnapping Freddy Heineken.
More recently, in 2016, he starred in the TV drama Close to the Enemy and the series Feed the Beast, where he played a chef named Dion Patras. In 2017, he was in the movie Geostorm. He also appeared in Hard Sun (2018) and Home Before Dark (2020–2021). As of 2025, he is expected to appear in the miniseries Mix Tape and The Stolen Girl.
Jim Sturgess's Music Career
Jim Sturgess has been writing and performing his own music since he was 15 years old. He has been part of the London music scene for many years, playing in bands like Saint Faith and Dilated Spies. He has also written music for some of his films. For example, he wrote and performed two songs for Crossing Over. He also worked with director Philip Ridley on three songs for the film Heartless.
In 2016, he released five special demo songs with his band, Tragic Toys. These songs were released to help raise money for a friend who had a serious health condition. The music for these demos was written by Mickey O'Brien, and Jim provided the vocals.
