The Story of the Owls
Soren's Journey Begins
The movie starts with Soren, a young barn owl. He lives in the Tyto Forest with his family. Soren loves hearing his father's tales. These stories are about the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole." They are brave warrior owls who fight evil. Soren's older brother, Kludd, does not like these stories.
One day, their father teaches them to fly. Kludd gets jealous of Soren. He pushes Soren off a branch. Both brothers fall to the ground. A dangerous Tasmanian devil attacks them. But two owls, Jatt and Jutt, save them. These owls work for the evil Pure Ones. They kidnap Soren and Kludd.
Life with the Pure Ones
Soren and Kludd are taken to a place called St. Aegolius Home for Orphaned Owls. The Pure Ones' queen, Nyra, greets them. She tells the kidnapped owls they will become soldiers or "pickers." Pickers search for tiny metal bits called "flecks." These flecks are used to build a powerful weapon.
Kludd chooses to become a soldier. Soren and a small elf owl named Gylfie become pickers. They are forced to be "moon-blinked." This means they lose their free will. But Soren and Gylfie resist this mind control.
Escape and New Friends
Grimble, a boreal owl, notices Soren and Gylfie. He works for the Pure Ones only to keep his family safe. Grimble secretly teaches Soren and Gylfie how to fly. But Nyra finds out about his actions. She fights Grimble and kills him.
Following Grimble's last instructions, Soren and Gylfie escape. They need to find the Great Tree of Ga'Hoole. Soon, they meet Twilight, a great grey owl, and Digger, a burrowing owl. While resting, Soren finds Mrs. P, his family's nest maid. She was captured by Twilight while looking for Soren and Kludd. Mrs. P agrees to join them. Together, they set off to find the Guardians.
Finding the Guardians
The group of owls flies towards the sea of Hoolemere. Some crows guide them to a special shrine. This shrine belongs to the Guardians. An old, wise echidna guards it. He tells the owls to fly across the sea to find the Island of Ga'Hoole.
During their flight, a big storm hits. Digger's wings freeze, and he falls into the sea. He almost drowns. But they are saved by Boron and Barran. They are a pair of snowy owls. They are also the king and queen of the Guardians! They lead Soren's group to the Great Tree of Ga'Hoole. There, Soren tells the Guardians about the Pure Ones' evil plans.
Training and a Trap
The Guardians are not sure if they believe Soren. But an old screech owl named Ezylryb is convinced. King Boron sends a great grey owl named Allomere to investigate St. Aegolius.
Soren and his friends stay at the Great Tree. They are looked after by Otulissa, a young Guardian-in-training. During a flying lesson, Soren tries "gizzard-flying." This is flying purely by instinct. He loses control and falls. Ezylryb rescues him. Soren then learns that Ezylryb is actually Lyze of Kiel. He is a legendary hero who defeated Metal Beak, Nyra's mate. Ezylryb teaches Soren that fighting is about doing what is right, not just glory.
Allomere returns with bad news. His two wingmen were killed in an ambush. He brings back two "moon-blinked" owlets. One of them is Soren's younger sister, Eglantine. The Guardians get ready for battle. They fly towards St. Aegolius. Ezylryb tells Soren to take care of his sister.
The Final Battle
Eglantine finally wakes up from her trance. She tells Soren that Kludd moon-blinked her. Kludd gave her to Allomere. This proves that Allomere is a traitor! The Guardians are flying into a trap.
The owls quickly fly back to St. Aegolius. They find Metal Beak holding the Guardians captive. They are trapped in a machine powered by "flecks." Bats guard the machine.
Twilight, Gylfie, and Digger fight off the bats. Metal Beak takes Allomere away. Meanwhile, Soren uses his gizzard-flying skills. He flies through a forest fire. He manages to disable the fleck trap. This frees the Guardians.
The Guardians and Twilight join the battle. Ezylryb goes straight for Metal Beak and Nyra. They almost defeat him. Soren sees Kludd and joins the fight. Kludd attacks Soren. They fight, and Kludd falls into the fire. He is presumed dead. Soren is furious. He grabs a flaming branch and stabs Metal Beak, killing him. Nyra is shocked by her mate's death. She retreats with the remaining Pure Ones, vowing revenge.
New Guardians
When they return to the Great Tree, Soren and his friends become new Guardians. King Boron and Queen Barran welcome them. Later, Soren tells their story to young owlets. He explains that Nyra is still out there. Kludd's body was never found. The movie ends with Ezylryb and the owls flying into another storm.
