Richard Roxburgh (born 23 January 1962) is a famous Australian actor and filmmaker. He has won many awards for his work in movies, TV shows, and plays. These include AFI and AACTA Awards, Logie Awards, and Helpmann Awards.
He started his acting journey with the Sydney Theatre Company. He has appeared in many Australian and international projects. Some of these are the movies Moulin Rouge! (2001) and Elvis (2022). He also starred in the TV series Rake (2010–2018). You might also know him from action films like Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) and Van Helsing (2004).

Richard Roxburgh's Early Life and School
Richard Roxburgh was born on January 23, 1962. His parents were John and Mary Roxburgh. He grew up in a town called Albury, New South Wales, in Australia.
Richard went to the Australian National University in Canberra. He studied economics there and finished his degree in 1984.
After university, he decided he wanted to be an actor. He tried out for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) twice. He got in on his second try and graduated in 1986.
Richard Roxburgh's Acting Career

Right after finishing NIDA, Richard Roxburgh started working with the Sydney Theatre Company. He also performed at the Belvoir St Theatre.
He became well-known for playing a detective named Roger Rogerson in the TV miniseries Blue Murder in 1995. In the 1990s, he acted in many Australian films and plays. He even played the main character, Hamlet, in a play in Sydney in 1994. In 2007, he won an award for his role in the play Toy Symphony.
International Movies and Famous Roles
In 2000, Richard Roxburgh appeared in his first big international movie. He played Hugh Stamp, a bad guy's helper, in Mission: Impossible 2. This movie was filmed in Sydney. He also played the Duke of Monroth in Baz Luhrmann's movie Moulin Rouge! (2001), which was also filmed in Sydney.
Over the next three years, Richard played three very famous characters:
- In 2002, he was Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles.
- In 2003, he played Holmes's enemy, Professor Moriarty, in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
- In 2004, he became Count Dracula in Van Helsing.
He is one of only two actors to have played all three of these iconic characters!
Directing and Television Work
Richard Roxburgh directed his first movie, Romulus, My Father, in 2007. This film won an AFI Award. From 2008 to 2009, he starred in the TV drama series East of Everything.
In 2010, Richard played former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke in a TV movie. He played Bob Hawke again in an episode of the Netflix series The Crown in 2020.
In 2010, Richard also helped create and star in the TV series Rake. He played Cleaver Greene, a very smart but troubled lawyer. He won an award for this role in 2012.
Recent Acting Projects
Richard has continued to act in many plays and movies. In 2010, he was in the play Uncle Vanya with other famous actors like Cate Blanchett. In 2013, he performed in Waiting for Godot. In 2014, he played the main role in Cyrano de Bergerac.
More recently, in 2023, he appeared in Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe. In 2024, he starred in the TV series Prosper. He also played journalist Peter Greste in the movie The Correspondent. He was also a voice actor in the animated movie Lesbian Space Princess.
Richard Roxburgh's Children's Book
Richard Roxburgh is not just an actor; he's also an author! He wrote and drew pictures for a children's adventure book called Artie and the Grime Wave. It was published in 2016 and has 240 pages.
Richard Roxburgh's Family Life
Richard Roxburgh married Italian opera singer and actress Silvia Colloca in 2004. They met while working on the movie Van Helsing, where he played Dracula and she played one of his brides! They have three children together.
