James Arthur Temp (born October 10, 1933 – died November 25, 2012) was an American football player. He was also a successful businessman and someone who gave a lot to his community.
James Temp was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He went to Aquinas High School there. After high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He played both baseball and football for the university. In 1955, during his senior year, he was named the top athlete at the school. Later, in 2007, he was honored by being added to the UW Athletic Hall of Fame.
Playing for the Packers
James Temp was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in the 1955 NFL Draft. He was the 17th player picked overall. Before joining the team, he served two years in the U.S. Army.
In 1957, he joined the Packers as a defensive end. He played 43 games for them over four seasons. His last two seasons (1959-1960) were under the famous coach Vince Lombardi. James Temp had to stop playing football because of a shoulder injury.
Helping the Community
After his football career, James Temp continued to be involved with the Green Bay Packers. In 1987, he joined the Green Bay Packers Board of Directors. He was also a special member of their Executive Committee from 1993 to 2004.
Temp also worked hard to help the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay (UWGB). He led the UW-Green Bay Founders Association. This group helped raise money for the university. He was president of the Association in 1980 and 1981.
In 1984, he helped lead the university's first big fundraising effort. They raised over $2.5 million for UWGB. To thank him, the university named a student dorm after him in 1989. It is called the James A. Temp Hall.
Besides his work with the university, Temp was a leader in many community groups. He helped business organizations, civic groups, and health agencies. He always worked to make his community better.
Later Life
James Temp faced health challenges with heart disease later in his life. He passed away on November 25, 2012, at the age of 79. He was watching football when he became ill. He was survived by his wife, Carol Jean Temp, their four daughters, 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
