The village of Allouez has an interesting past. It was named after a French Jesuit priest and missionary named Father Claude-Jean Allouez. He was an important figure in early American history.

Early Names and Founding

In the 1800s, soldiers first called the area "Shanttown." Later, in 1824, a judge named James Doty chose it for a courthouse. He gave it the more formal name of Menomineeville. However, he didn't officially register the plan until 1829. Allouez officially became its own village in 1874. It separated from the nearby town of Bellevue at that time.
