James Dean Waite (born April 15, 1969) is a Canadian ice hockey coach and a former professional goaltender. A goaltender is the player who tries to stop the puck from going into the net. James Waite used to play in goal for different teams. Today, he works as a coach for the Chicago Blackhawks, helping their goalies get better.
Playing Hockey
James Waite grew up in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. When he was younger, he played in big hockey tournaments for kids called the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 1981 and 1982.
James was considered one of the best young goalies in the late 1980s. Many people thought he would become a huge star in hockey. He was even named the best goaltender at the 1988 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. Canada won the gold medal at that tournament, and James was chosen for the tournament's all-star team.
The Chicago Blackhawks picked him in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Even though the Blackhawks already had other great goalies, James played for them. He later played for the San Jose Sharks and the Phoenix Coyotes. On November 16, 1998, he was named the NHL Player of the Week because of his excellent performance. After 2001, James Waite played the rest of his hockey career in Germany. He played for six years with ERC Ingolstadt in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, which is Germany's top hockey league. He signed with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in January 2010 before he stopped playing professionally.
Family Life
James Waite's brother, Stéphane Waite, is also involved in hockey. Stéphane was the goaltending coach for the Montreal Canadiens. Before that, he worked as the goaltending coach for the Chicago Blackhawks from 2005 to 2009.
