Jindera is a small town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the Greater Hume Shire area. Jindera is located about 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) north of Albury, a larger regional city. In 2016, about 2,222 people lived in Jindera.
One of the most interesting places to visit in Jindera is the Jindera Pioneer Museum. This museum is set up inside an old store and home that belonged to the Wagner family, who were early settlers. You can see what a store looked like in the 1800s, filled with old-fashioned goods. The living area at the back shows how families used to live during that time.

Discovering Jindera's Past
Jindera has a rich history, starting with early explorers and settlers.
Early Explorers and Names
In 1824, two famous explorers, Hamilton Hume and William Hovell, travelled through this area. They were on a long journey from Sydney to Geelong. The town was first called "Dight's Forest." This name came from John Dight, who was related to Hamilton Hume. The name "Jindera" is likely from an Aboriginal language, but its exact meaning is not known today.
German Settlers in Jindera
During the 1800s, many German Australians moved to Jindera. They came mainly from South Australia in the 1860s. These settlers helped to shape the town's culture and community.
Post Office and Local Sports
The Dight's Forest Post Office first opened on 1 January 1870. It was later renamed Jindera in 1885. Around 1900, local Australian rules football teams from Jindera, Thurgoona, and Black Range played in a competition called the Swain Trophy.

St John's Lutheran School
St John's Lutheran School is an independent school in Jindera. It teaches students from preschool up to Year 6. This school is part of Lutheran Education Australia, a group that supports Lutheran schools across the country. St John's was started in 1868 by the first Lutheran settlers who travelled from South Australia to Jindera. The very first classroom was a simple log cabin attached to Pastor J.F. Goessling's house. The school's current building was built in 1924.
Jindera Public School
Jindera Public School moved to its current location in 1992. It provides education for local students.
St Mary MacKillop College
In 2009, St Mary MacKillop College, Albury opened a campus in Jindera. It is located on the grounds of St Mary's Church and offers more schooling options for students in the area.
