Jiro Ono (小野 二郎, Ono Jirō, born 27 October 1925) is a very famous Japanese sushi chef. He used to own a special sushi restaurant called Sukiyabashi Jiro in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan. Many people think Jiro Ono is one of the best sushi makers alive. He is also known for creating new ways to prepare sushi that are used today.
Becoming a Sushi Master
Jiro Ono was born in a city called Tenryū in Japan. He started working in a local restaurant when he was only seven years old. Later, he moved to Tokyo to learn how to become a sushi chef.
He became a fully qualified sushi chef in 1951. Then, in 1965, he opened his very own restaurant. It was named Sukiyabashi Jiro (すきやばし次郎) and was located in Ginza, Tokyo.
His Famous Restaurant
Sukiyabashi Jiro became a very well-known restaurant. Important people, like former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and United States President Barack Obama, have eaten there.
President Obama once said, "I was born in Hawaii and ate a lot of sushi, but this was the best sushi I've ever had in my life." This shows how amazing Jiro Ono's sushi is!

Jiro's Family and Legacy
Jiro Ono has two sons, Yoshikazu and Takashi Ono. Both of his sons also became sushi chefs. Takashi, his younger son, even runs his own restaurant that has received special awards from the Michelin Guide.
Jiro Ono was featured in a 2011 documentary film called Jiro Dreams of Sushi. This movie helped share his story and passion for sushi with the world.
Jiro and his family are concerned about overfishing. They worry that some important ingredients for traditional sushi might disappear because too many fish are being caught.
As of 2023, Jiro Ono has stepped back from running the restaurant every day due to his health. His son, Yoshikazu, now mostly manages Sukiyabashi Jiro.
