Ram-don
Jjapaguri (ram-don) with beef, as featured in Parasite

Jjapaguri or Chapaguri (Korean: 짜파구리), also known as ram-don in English, is a popular South Korean noodle dish. It is made by mixing two different kinds of instant noodles: Chapagetti and Neoguri. Both of these noodle brands are made by a company called Nongshim. Many people see Jjapaguri as a comforting and unique Korean meal.

What is Jjapaguri?

Jjapaguri is a simple dish that combines two distinct instant noodle flavors. Chapagetti is known for its savory black bean sauce, similar to the Korean dish jjajangmyeon. Neoguri is a spicy seafood-flavored noodle soup. When these two are mixed, they create a unique taste that is both rich and a little spicy. It's a quick and easy meal, often enjoyed as a budget-friendly comfort food.

How Jjapaguri Became Famous

Jjapaguri first became well-known in South Korea and on the internet around 2013. This happened after it was shown on a popular TV show called Dad! Where Are We Going?. The show featured fathers and their children going on trips, and the dish quickly caught on with viewers.

The Parasite Movie and "Ram-don"

In 2019, Jjapaguri gained worldwide fame when it was featured in the award-winning South Korean film Parasite. The movie's English translator, Darcy Paquet, decided to call the dish "ram-don" for the film's English version. He combined the words "ramen" (a type of noodle) and "udon" (another type of noodle) to help English speakers understand the mix of noodles.

After Parasite became popular, many people around the world started looking up how to make "ram-don." Videos showing how to prepare the dish quickly appeared on YouTube. Because of this huge popularity, Nongshim, the company that makes Chapagetti and Neoguri, even started selling a special instant noodle package that combines both flavors into one "Chapaguri" product.
