Jo Jo English's Basketball Journey
Playing Professional Basketball
Jo Jo English was a 6-foot-4-inch guard. He is often remembered for an event during a 1994 NBA playoff game. This game was between the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks. During the game, English and Derek Harper of the Knicks got into a fight. The fight even went into the stands where fans were sitting.
Because of this, the NBA Commissioner, David Stern, gave both players a punishment. English was suspended for one game, and Harper was suspended for two games.
After this, English played only eight games in the next NBA season. He then joined other basketball leagues, including the minor-league Continental Basketball Association. In 1995, he played for the Adelaide 36ers in Australia's National Basketball League. He averaged 14.8 points per game in 21 games there.
English also played one game with the Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs in the 1996 PBA Governors' Cup in the Philippines. However, an old injury made it hard for him to play his best. He later played basketball in Turkey for two seasons and in Israel for one season. He was the top scorer in the Israeli Basketball Premier League in the 1999–2000 season.
Coaching High School Teams
After his playing career, Jo Jo English started coaching basketball. He spent three seasons as the head coach for the boys' basketball team at Sumter High School in Sumter, South Carolina. He left this position on September 19, 2015.
On March 16, 2018, he was hired as the head coach at Richland Northeast High School in Columbia, South Carolina. Then, on June 3, 2021, English became the head coach at his old high school, Lower Richland High School.
