Discovering Joan Hinde
Joan Hinde was born in Eckington, Derbyshire, England. When she was just six years old, she started learning to play the cornet. Her uncle, who led a local brass band, taught her. This early start helped her become a skilled musician.
Early Life and Family
In 1966, Joan married Kenneth Hopson. The next year, in 1967, they welcomed their daughter, Claire. Joan and her husband lived in Felpham, which is a town near Bognor Regis in West Sussex. Joan Hinde passed away in a nursing home in Chichester, West Sussex, on 22 January 2015. She was 81 years old.
Joan's Amazing Career
Joan Hinde's journey in show business began very early. In the 1940s, she appeared on a BBC radio show called Children's Hour. As a teenager, she became a regular on another popular BBC radio show, Variety Bandbox. She performed alongside famous musicians like Billy Ternent and Eddie Calvert. During this time, she was the only female trumpet player in the world to broadcast Haydn's famous Trumpet Concerto.
A Star on the Live Stage
Even though many performers moved to television, Joan mostly stayed on the live stage. She became very well-known for her live shows. She performed with many famous entertainers. These included Elsie and Doris Waters, Jimmy James and Co., Gladys Morgan, The Black and White Minstrel Show, Max Bygraves, Harry Secombe, and Ken Dodd.
Joan also traveled with Harry Secombe to entertain British armed forces. She performed for soldiers during conflicts in places like the Falkland Islands and Aden.
Overcoming Challenges
In 2008, Joan Hinde had a small stroke. This could have stopped her trumpet playing career. But just eleven days later, she was back on stage! She performed at the London Palladium in a special show honoring Ken Dodd. This showed her amazing strength and dedication.
A Rare TV Appearance
For most of her career, Joan was a radio, theatre, and cabaret artist. She did not appear on television often. However, in 2002, she made a rare TV appearance. It was on LWT's Another Audience with Ken Dodd. She played the part of a Lady Mayoress who joined in with Ken Dodd's singing.
In 2012, Joan Hinde announced she would be retiring from stage performances. This was due to health reasons. She passed away on 22 January 2015.
