Joan Rand Moschovakis is a brilliant logician and mathematician. She focuses on a special area called intuitionistic logic and mathematics. This way of thinking about math is different because it only accepts things that can be built or proven step-by-step. She used to be a professor at Occidental College and now visits UCLA to continue her work.
Her Education and Research
Joan Moschovakis earned her highest degree, a Ph.D., in 1965. She studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her teacher was a famous mathematician named Stephen Kleene. Her Ph.D. paper was about how to prove things in intuitionistic math. It looked at how we can show that something exists or that one thing leads to another.
Family and Lectures
Joan Moschovakis is married to another mathematician, Yiannis Moschovakis. They are both very smart! In 2014, they gave special talks together called the Lindström Lectures. These talks happened at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
