Early Life and Education
Joan Salvador i Riera came from a family of naturalists. His father, Jaume Salvador i Pedrol, was also a pharmacist and studied nature. His grandfather, Joan Salvador i Boscà, was a very famous naturalist too!
Joan studied at the Estudi General de Barcelona. This was a very important school at the time. He earned his Master of Arts degree there in 1700.
Becoming a Pharmacist
In 1702, Joan joined the Barcelona Apothecary School. An apothecary was like a pharmacist today. This school taught him how to prepare medicines.
Studying Plants
Joan loved studying plants, which is called botany. He traveled to learn from famous scientists. He studied with Peire Magnol in Montpellier, France. He also learned from Joseph Pitton de Tournefort in Paris. Tournefort was a friend of Joan's father.
Travels and Discoveries
In the fall of 1706, Joan Salvador returned to Barcelona. He had been on a long trip. He visited a region in France called Occitania and also traveled through Italy. When he came back, Barcelona was ruled by Charles III of Spain.
Contributions to Science
Joan Salvador made a very important contribution to science. He helped create the oldest known plant collection in Spain. This collection is now kept at the Botanic Institute of Barcelona. It helps scientists study plants from the past.
Writing About Nature
Joan Salvador also wrote about his studies. The Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris asked him to write a special report. This report was about different types of art, fishing tools, and sea creatures. It was published in 1722.
